Aston Villa punishment revealed after ‘serious’ rule breach – boardroom source

Aston Villa are facing punishment from UEFA as they are expected to have breached squad cost ratio (SCR) rules for the 2024 calendar year.

Clubs in European competition are required to keep spending on player wages and fees to 80% of revenue – with that figure dropping to 70% for 2025.

Aston Villa played in both the Uefa Conference League and Champions League in 2024, and analysis from Deloitte released in January showed they spent 96% of their revenue on wage costs.

The Midlands giants have already pleaded with Premier League rivals to increase the loss threshold under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) from £105million over three years to £135million, while they have also opposed plans to introduce SCR in the English top-flight.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on the potential punishment for his former side.

Aston Villa facing ‘£10m’ UEFA fine

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness has claimed Villa could face a fine of as much as £10million for the breach.

He suggested Villa’s previous fine for submitting financial information late could count against them.

In positive news for Unai Emery’s side, Football Insider has been told that Villa are set to generate around £70million in prize money this season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s pretty serious.

“It’s been said that it’s just a fine, but it could be as much as £10million – that’s a big number, if it’s the full extent of it.

“We’ll have to wait and see how UEFA handle this. It could be smaller.

“Villa have already had one warning about sending their numbers into UEFA late, so we’ll have to see how it plays out.

“It could be a financial situation.”

Aston Villa shortlist potential Rashford replacement

Former Aston Villa senior scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider (19 February) that Nicolas Jackson is on the list of targets at Aston Villa ahead of the summer transfer window.

He claimed Jackson could become an option should Villa lose Marcus Rashford when his loan spell ends at the end of this season.

The Chelsea star has hit nine goals and contributed five assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.
