Aston Villa ready to agree John McGinn deal after Newcastle swoop

Aston Villa are ready to agree a John McGinn deal following Newcastle United’s move to sign him this summer.

The Scotland international has spent the past seven years at Villa Park after joining in a £3million deal from Hibernian in 2018.

McGinn has since gone on to make 285 appearances for Villa and has captained the club for the past three years.

The 30-year-old registered four goals and six assists after starting in 40 of his 49 outings last season, helping his side secure a European place for the third consecutive season after finishing sixth in the Premier League table.

Football Insider revealed on 7 August Newcastle have opened preliminary talks to sign McGinn as they look to add their midfield options this summer.

Eddie Howe is understood to have given the green light for the deal to take place.

Everton have also made a move to sign McGinn, but their £18million bid was turned down by Villa Park chiefs.

Aston Villa plan John McGinn showdown talks

McGinn has no doubt been an integral player for Unai Emery since his appointment in October 2022.

That is why the Spanish boss appears to be keen on ensuring his captain remains at the club heading into the new season.

The Athletic reported on 7 August Villa are planning to discuss a new contract with McGinn following the interest from rival Premier League clubs.

The midfielder’s current deal is set to expire in June 2027, but the club are now looking to hold talks over a possible extension.

It comes after Villa have agreed new contracts with Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne as they look to keep the core of their squad together.

Football Insider revealed on 3 August Villa are also doing everything they can to keep Morgan Rogers this summer.

Chelsea are believed to have identified the England international as a key target ahead of the transfer window closing on 1 September.

However, Emery’s side are adamant the 23-year-old is not for sale and are also planning to open talks with him about a new contract.

Aston Villa get financial boost after £120m reveal

It’s no secret Villa have faced profit and sustainability (PSR) issues over the past couple of seasons, with Premier League sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

They were close to the spending limit for 2024-25 before completing the last-ditch sale of their women’s team to raise funds before the 30 June accounting deadline.

However, Villa have received a financial boost after their £120million loss for 2022-23 has now dropped out of their PSR calculations.

In terms of transfer activity, it’s been a relatively quiet window so far at Villa Park.

Evann Guessand joined the club in a £30million deal from Nice on Friday (8 August), while Yasin Ozcan, Marco Bizot, Modou Keba Cisse and Zepiqueno Redmond have also arrived through the door this summer.
