Aston Villa ready to complete ‘one big marquee signing’ – Keith Wyness

Aston Villa’s Champions League ambitions were dented after losing 2-1 late on against Man City on Tuesday.

The Midlands giants sit seventh in the table and are two points adrift of the top five having played a game more than their rivals.

Unai Emery and Monchi will be putting plans in place for the transfer window as they bid to stay in the fight in the 2025-26 campaign.

They brought four new faces to the club in January but couldn’t avoid being dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at the quarter-final stage.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted his old side will be looking at “one big marquee signing” this summer.

Aston Villa don’t need transfer revolution, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested Aston Villa do not need a big number of new faces as they already have a capable squad.

Emery’s side had won five straight games in the Premier League before their loss against Man City.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think it’s going to amount to one big marquee signing.

“That could be the difference for Aston Villa.

“They’ve already got a very nice squad with some real talent.

“But they need some more big players to kick on, particularly if they are in the Champions League.

“If they are, I think they’ll be looking for one big deal that they otherwise couldn’t afford.

“In the league, that could also be the difference between top four and not.”

Aston Villa ready to block Man City’s Rogers swoop

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed earlier this month (9 April) that Aston Villa are confident of keeping Morgan Rogers this summer despite potential interest from Man City.

Man City have been linked with a shock move to bring the 22-year-old back to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Sources say three-cap England international Rogers is happy at Villa Park after signing a contract running until June 2030 last year.
