Kieran Maguire salutes Aston Villa after ‘fantastic’ £56m document reveal
Aston Villa would have broken even in the 2020-21 financial year had it not been for the impact of Covid.
So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Villa published their accounts last Tuesday (1 March).
Villa revealed a £37.3million loss for the year ending 31 May 2021 as revenues reached a record £183.6m.
Losses were down from £99.2m in the previous 12 months, which was the second-biggest shortfall in the league at the time.
The club estimates that the pandemic has cost them £56m in total as restrictions almost totally eliminated matchday income.
Man City, who won the title and reached the Champions League final, are the only Premier League side so far to post a profit for the 2020-21 season.
Maguire claims that Villa could have matched City had it not been for the pandemic.
“Villa have got a fantastic analysis of the impact of Covid,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“They have managed to paint a picture of how they have been hit by the pandemic
“They think Covid has cost them £56m since March 2020, and two thirds of that is in 2020-21.
“Had it not been for Covid, the club would likely have broken even on the basis of these numbers.

Villa finished 11th in 2020-21 in their second season since promotion from the Championship.
They had a negative net transfer spend of approximately £90m over the course of the campaign.
