Aston Villa set for three marquee signings ‘after Ross Barkley arrives’ – Wyness
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed his old side to make four summer signings after their strong 2023-24 campaign.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Unai Emery’s experience in Europe will be crucial to building a suitable squad for the Champions League.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on Saturday morning (18 May) that Aston Villa are closing in on re-signing Barkley after Unai Emery gave the deal the green light.
The Midlands club will play Champions League football next season after finishing fourth in the Premier League in the 2023-24 campaign.
Villa are kicking off plans for the summer transfer window – which is set to open on 14 June.
Aston Villa to add four quality signings this summer, says Wyness
Wyness backed Emery and his recruitment staff to add reinforcements through the spine of the side.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t know if you’d call Ross Barkley a marquee signing, but he’s a top squad player.
“He’s had a great season at Luton.
“The fans should be incredibly excited about the Champions League.
“In terms of numbers coming in, I would expect another three signings after Barkley arrives.
“They’ll need to review the injuries, but I would think that they need more cover in defence and midfield.
“Ollie Watkins has proven to be a superstar, but he’ll need cover as well.

“The key will be for Emery to sustain a quality squad when there are injuries and with the rotation being in the Champions League will bring.
“He’s got experience of Europe, so he knows what he’s getting into.”
