Aston Villa set sights on defender signing after Diego Carlos news – sources

Aston Villa want to secure a new defender signing if they are to let Diego Carlos leave the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources told Football Insider on Tuesday (14 January) that Villa could allow Carlos, 31, to leave the club this month.

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce are keen on the Brazillian, who was heavily linked with an exit during the summer window.

Villa are holding out for a good fee for Carlos and will also have to line up a replacement for the centre-back before they are willing to sanction his departure.

Tyrone Mings has made a full return from his serious knee injury, but with Pau Torres out for months – Unai Emery does not want to weaken his squad in the mid-season window.

Villa, who sit eighth in the table, are targeting another top four finish in the Premier League this term.

Carlos has played 17 games across all competitions this term, starting in 14 of those outings.

Aston Villa want replacement before sanctioning Carlos exit

His contract at Villa Park only runs until June 2026 after arriving from Sevilla two and a half years ago.

Aston Villa are already close to making one January signing after agreeing a fee for Borussia Dortmund star Donyell Malen.
