Aston Villa set to bank £40m+ windfall as documents analysed – Keith Wyness

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted his old side could bank a £40million-plus windfall through their Champions League participation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed sponsors and kit suppliers will also boost the club’s kitty with performance-based bonuses.

Aston Villa will face Young Boys, Bayern Munich, Bologna, Club Brugge, Juventus, RB Leipzig, Monaco and Celtic in the league phase – which was drawn last week.

As per official Uefa documents released in March, league stage qualification is worth an immediate £16million to all the participants.

£1.8million will be payable for any win, while Villa will earn £593,000 for a draw – and almost £723million will be distributed between the participating clubs depending on the size of their country’s TV market and club coefficient.

Clubs also earn a share of more than £200million depending on their final ranking in the 36-team league phase.

Aston Villa on track for £40m+ Champions League payout, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they could be looking at more than £40million from the league phase.

“If you go all the way and win it, it’s over £80million – but I don’t think they’ve got that kind of ambition this year.

“Certainly they are looking at much more than £30million. It’s based on results, so any wins will increase that number.

“Villa should do well. They’ve got a blockbuster tie against Celtic, which will be the Battle of Britain.

“Bayern Munich are coming to visit them as well – there are some great fixtures for Villa fans.

“The sponsors and kit suppliers will be paying out bonuses for results, and I think they’ve got a chance to clear well over £40million.”
