Aston Villa set to complete deal on Wednesday as attacker passes medical - report

By Dominic Toner

Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede has completed a medial at Middlesbrough, according to a report.

Sky Sports claimed on their transfer centre blog on Tuesday (19:22) that the 28-year-old is set to complete his move to the Premier League side on Wednesday after passing a medical.

It is understood that a £6million fee has been agreed, which is the same figure that Villa paid to sign him from Blackburn in 2015.

Gestede is set to leave Villa Park after making 55 appearances for the club and scoring 10 goals.

The striker has made 19 appearances this season, but has been a bit-part player since Steve Bruce’s appointment during mid-season.

He is now set to compete for a starting position in Middlesbrough’s squad, who are currently 16th-placed on the league table and four points above the relegation places.

Gestede was relegated from the Premier League with Villas last season and managed just six goals across all competitions, but is now set for another crack back in England’s top-flight division.

Football Insider verdict:

Villa certainly have enough forward options to deal with the loss of striker Gestede. Jonathan Kodjia has become the club’s star forward this season and Bruce was only using Gestede as an impact player. Gabriel Agbonlahor, Jordan Ayew and Ross McCormack are also available options in the squad and Villa have enough firepower to make up the ground to the play-off places. Gestede has not managed to show his best qualities since his move from Blackburn and picking up £6million for him represents a good deal. He was unable to prove himself during his time in the Premier League and Villa are trying to build a squad that can make an automatic return to it.
