Aston Villa should lead Premier League revolution after Sawiris latest – Wyness
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has urged his former side to lead a revolution in the Premier League to stop clubs “resorting to law” to get their way.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –claimed a vote should be put forward to that end, allowing clubs and fans to “get back to what we love”.
Speaking to the Financial Times (11 June), Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris revealed he was seeking legal advice on potentially lodging a formal complaint against Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
“The rules do not make sense and are not good for football,” he said.
Aston Villa, who are close to selling star man Douglas Luiz to avoid potential punishment under PSR, saw their proposal for an increase in allowable losses to £135million voted down by other Premier League clubs this month.
Aston Villa should lead charge to stop legal fights in Premier League, says Wyness
Everton and Nottingham Forest have faced legal fights for breaching PSR, while Leicester and Man City have also been hit with financial charges recently.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s now becoming a financial game rather than a football game. It’s a big danger to us.
“The Everton commission cost the Premier League £5million, a ridiculous amount for a ridiculous argument.
“There are probably more KCs coming out of the Premier League headquarters than sporting directors.
“It’s so wrong, and things have been deflected away from football to the courtroom.
“I was pleased to see Sawiris come out and say this, in so many words.
“All owners should be focusing on the sporting side, but some are increasing their legal fees and taking things into the courtroom.
“There should be a vote. The majority should come together and stop the legal situations.

“There has to be a way to avoid resorting to law, as much as possible.
“We need to get back to what we love, the great games in the Premier League. It’s a superb product.”
