Aston Villa staff have serious concerns about Matty Cash – Ex-Villa scout
Aston Villa staff behind the scenes have retained concerns about Matty Cash’s ability, according to the club’s former senior scout.
Mick Brown, who worked at Villa Park until his departure in 2021, shared that the scouting department had reservations about his defensive capability before he was signed from Nottingham Forest, with some of their concerns lingering.
While he noted that Cash has made considerable improvements under Unai Emery, there is also a feeling that the position will need to be upgraded in the near future.
Cash has now spent over a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury suffered in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at Villa Park on 24 August.
However, alongside his injury predicament, questions remain behind the scenes at Villa about his consistency and ability to continue as their long-term first-choice right-back.
This comes following Football Insider’s reveal that Villa are planning to sign a new full-back in the January transfer window.
Aston Villa concerned about Matty Cash as replacement lined up
Emery had recently explained that the Poland international is the only senior right-back at the club, raising speculation that they would enter the transfer market for a new option.
Brown was involved in the move to bring Cash to Villa Park in 2020 in a deal worth £14million, but revealed he had concerns over his defending.
That explanation has hinted that they could look to land a replacement.
“We signed Matty Cash when I was at the club,” he told Football Insider.
“I always had slight reservations about him in a defensive capacity. He looked, to me, like a right-winger playing at right-back.
“To be fair to the lad, he’s got better since joining and he’s playing in a better team now.
“But I have heard that some of the issues and concerns we had are still shared at Villa.
“The problem is, when you get to where Villa are and you’re challenging at the top of the table, you look to see where you can get better than what you’ve got.
“Emery has probably looked and thought ‘Yeah, Matty Cash has done well, but I need a better right-back if we’re playing at the top level.
“I understand they’ll be looking at that position and thinking if they can get the right player, it’ll make them a better team.“
