Sam Johnstone delivers verdict on future of PL brother
By Danny Wright
Aston Villa’s on-loan goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is hoping to see his brother Max Johnstone – also a keeper – flourish at Premier League giants Manchester United.
Sam Johnstone, the elder of the two siblings, moved to the West Midlands on a loan deal in January and, after a shaky start, has become a hit at the club with a string of impressive displays.
The Villa star’s brother is also making his own impression in United’s youth team.
Max Johnstone, 18, has recently been involved in the Dallas Cup in the USA where he turned out for the Under-18 and reserve squads.
He only signed for United last summer but has already impressed when he made a late penalty save against German club Eintracht Frankfurt in a friendly.

“Max is enjoying it,” the Villa loanee told Man United’s official website. “I think, at first, it was an eye opener for him, coming to Manchester United, but he got his head down and he works hard with the Under-18s and the Reserves and the goalkeeping coaches.
“He’s improving and we’ll see what happens with him. Hopefully, he can stay and keep learning from the coaches and the players. He loves it.”
Sam Johnstone, 24, has made 20 appearances for Steve Bruce’s side since sealing his temporary switch in the winter transfer window.
The Telegraph reported in March that Villa were in talks with United to sign the impressive shot-stopper on a permanent deal in the summer and are willing to pay up to £3million for his services.
Bournemouth, Everton and Sunderland are also said to be keeping tabs on Villa’s temporary No 1.
He has kept eight clean sheets for the Villans with his latest coming in the second-city derby win against Birmingham on Sunday.
