Aston Villa tipped to complete loan signing after crushing £26m blow - pundit
Noel Whelan has backed Aston Villa to sign a centre-back on loan following Diego Carlos’ crushing injury blow.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Birmingham-based side will be limited in their potential targets with under three weeks left of the summer window.
Aston Villa confirmed on Monday (15 August) that Carlos ruptured his Achilles tendon during the 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday (13 August) and will undergo surgery.
The Guardian updated on Monday, claiming the Brazil international is unlikely to play for the Midlands giants again this year.
Carlos joined Aston Villa from Champions League Sevilla for a reported £26million fee earlier this summer.
Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause, and Calum Chambers are the other senior centre-back options at Gerrard’s disposal.

Whelan insisted he had been impressed with Carlos prior to his injury blow.
“You’ve got to think that they’d be after another player now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I was really impressed with him when he was on, too. He’s got that turn of pace, he’s aggressive – but now there’s a massive gap for Aston Villa. He was their main centre-back signing.
“Steven Gerrard will be working hard to find a loan replacement until the end of the season – they need that cover.
“It’ll all be about players who are available at this late stage of the window now.”
Gerrard admitted he was “extremely worried” about Carlos’ injury post-match but insisted he would “wait and see” before committing to further signings.
Villa have also signed Philippe Coutinho, Robin Olsen, Ludwig Augustinsson, and Boubacar Kamara this summer.
