Aston Villa tipped to complete marquee signing in January after source’s ‘huge’ Purslow reveal – pundit

Alex McLeish has suggested Aston Villa could bring in just one marquee signing during Steven Gerrard’s first transfer window in charge.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa boss insisted the Midlands giants do not need to bolster their squad with numbers but with quality.

A Villa source has told Football Insider Gerrard will be backed with “huge” funds in both January and next summer’s window.

Owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris have given the green light for the club to continue their big spending.

The businessmen have sanctioned over £300million of signings since sealing promotion in 2019.

However, McLeish suggested one, high-profile signing might be all Gerrard wants in January.

Asked if Gerrard’s arrival would tempt big names to Villa Park, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I believe that would have a bearing.

“I also do believe there are many players, whether in England, the UK, Europe or the world, Steven Gerrard will be looking to enhance his team in certain ways.

“They’ve got no shortage of analysis or knowing players available in the world.

“As we’ve seen, they have spent money. They’ll certainly look to back him. Steven will possibly be looking not at five or six players. One player can make the difference.”

Villa spent over £25million each on Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey this summer.

Their spending was mitigated by the £100million departure of Jack Grealish.

Despite their big spending, Villa currently sit 16th in the Premier League table.
