Aston Villa tipped to hand Gomez lifeline amid Liverpool ‘worries’ – pundit

Joe Gomez could overcome his injury problems and “flourish” at Aston Villa by signing on loan in January, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old will be “worried” about a lack of game-time at Liverpool.

Gomez made his first Liverpool appearance since mid-October on Tuesday (7 December) as the Merseyside club defeated Milan 2-1 in the Champions League.

The 11-cap England international returned to action after a calf injury sustained in training.

According to the Mirror (29 November), new Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is targeting Gomez ahead of the winter window.

The report claims the Midlands club want the 24-year-old on a temporary basis.

When asked about Gomez’s Anfield future, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He needs to be playing now.

“I know he’s suffered injuries and he was hovering around that Liverpool first team before that. But he’s at that crucial age now where he’ll be worried about a lack of games.

“He needs to be playing week-in, week-out – and Villa could be a good move. He can really flourish over there with some game time under Steven Gerrard.”

The defender has made just three starts for Liverpool this season – none of which came in the Premier League.

Gomez was sidelined for 231 days last season with a knee injury – missing this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

Aston Villa boss Gerrard will be looking to bolster a defence that has shipped 24 goals this term.

Football Insider revealed last month (26 November) that the recently-appointed manager is looking to strengthen the spine of the team by bringing in a centre-back and central midfielder in the winter window.
