Aston Villa tipped to sign top star on loan after exit announced - Hutton
Alan Hutton has suggested Aston Villa may sign a new “quality” defender on loan rather than permanently this month.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa star insisted Steven Gerrard may want to wait until the summer before pulling the trigger on a big-money signing.
As reported by the Athletic’s Gregg Evans on Monday (17 January), Villa have made signing a centre-back a priority this month after Ezri Konsa’s injury scare against Manchester United.
As quoted by the Birmingham Mail (17 January), Gerrard insisted he wants four centre-backs after Axel Tuanzebe’s loan was cut short.
Hutton tipped Villa to explore their options in the window, even if Konsa is fine.
However, he suggested a loan move may be more likely this month.

Discussing a potential new centre-back signing, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it will be something he will be monitoring, something that he will be looking at.
“Obviously, you’ve got Kortney Hause there, Tyrone Mings, Konsa. I think Konsa will be fine, it looked like a whack he’d taken. They can be very sore, especially around the hip area, but I’m sure he will be okay.
“With Axel leaving, it’s probably a position he is feeling a little bit light in. He may want to bring in another option but it will be interesting to see what type of player he does bring in.
“Is it going to be somebody who’s really going to push the two main stars on for their position? Or is it going to be someone more for the squad.
“A loan move could make sense. I think ultimately, he will be happy with what he has got. He will believe, with the signings they have brought in, it has been a really good window so far.
“They can work with the squad they have until the summer. If something does arise, I think they Villa will jump at it but January is a difficult month to get your top targets.
“He might possibly wait until the summer unless a loan deal for someone of quality arises.”
Villa have added Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho to the senior squad this month.
The Villans also signed teenage defender Kerr Smith from Dundee United.
