‘Aston Villa to invest £300m after new announcement’

Aston Villa have finally announced their plans to redevelop their famous Villa Park home, increasing capacity to over 50,000.

The club have announced details of phase one, with a revamped North Stand set to wrap into the Trinity Stand – which will also see enhancements.

Villa also revealed a feasibility study into improving transport links around the stadium as they set sights on further capacity boosts in other areas of the ground.

The famous ground, originally opened in 1897, will host games at Euro 2028 – which will be hosted in the UK and Ireland.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on the redevelopment project.

Aston Villa redevelopment is a ‘great move’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed the total project, including transport upgrades, could cost up to £300million.

Villa have confirmed there will be no reduction in capacity while remodelling work is ongoing.

Wyness insisted FA Cup semi-finals could return to Villa Park in future to boost the club’s revenue.

Tottenham (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)62,850
West Ham (London Stadium)62,500
Liverpool (Anfield)61,276

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m a fan of Villa Park being rebuilt and expanded.

“Especially the North Stand. I did a major plan when I was at Villa.

“It needs this, and it’s great that they’ll rebuild the hospitality and concourses.

“I’ve seen that it could be over 12,000 seats, which is a big increase.

“The cost is going to be quite extensive, because it’s not just the North Stand – they’re looking around the whole stadium.

“The big bottleneck, as we’ve talked about, is the transport. I understand they’ve agreed to lengthen platforms and increase the station size.

“Those things don’t come cheap. With all those things part of this redevelopment, I think the total cost could be up to £300million.

“It’s that sort of level. Villa Park is a great Mecca of football.

“I think we’re going to see FA Cup semi-finals start coming back, which will help with revenue streams.

“They’ll be looking at concerts and making the stadium work harder.

“It’s a great venue and it’s not far from the city centre. With new train links, if that’s resolved properly, it’s a great move.”

Aston Villa fear PSG will win Rashford race

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (30 April) that Aston Villa chiefs are increasingly convinced Marcus Rashford will join Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Villa agreed a £40million option to buy clause when they signed Rashford on loan from Man United in February.

However, any move is dependent on the forward’s approval – and Villa believe Champions League semi-finalists PSG are in pole position to agree a blockbuster deal.
