‘Aston Villa to replace John McGinn’ – Fans fume after latest at Crystal Palace

John McGinn has found himself in hot water after Aston Villa were thumped 4-1 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Tuesday.

The Scotland international was one of just six Villa players to complete the full 90 minutes as Unai Emery’s side were subjected to their joint-heaviest defeat of the Premier League season.

Ollie Watkins was at the centre of VAR controversy for Villa, but even with a goal ruled out, there was no explanation as the Villans simply folded to Oliver Glasner’s side away from home.

The striker combined with Morgan Rogers to finally score a much-anticipated equaliser, with Ismaila Sarr scoring the opener after just 29 minutes.

With Jean-Philippe Mateta netting just seven minutes after Rogers’ goal, any chance of comeback win was quickly extinguished when Sarr grabbed his second of the game before Eddie Nketiah added a fourth.

Aston Villa fans take frustrations out on John McGinn

Only last week was McGinn celebrating his 500th career appearance across spells with Villa, Hibernian and St Mirren, but now he is facing the ugly side of football.

Unai Emery would have loved for his side to continue their unbeaten streak, having drawn against Ipswich Town and Liverpool while beating Tottenham and Chelsea, but it was not to be.

It is easy to pick any of the players to criticise, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez being taken off at half-time and Jacob Ramsey making too many errors, but it is the captain who is facing the brunt of it all.

McGinn is known, and loved, for his ability to cover the field and throw himself into tackles, but it was this chaos that eventually saw supporters turn on him as Villa were thrashed at Selhurst Park.

Aston Villa fans want new signings in the summer transfer window

Likely as a result of supporters reacting emotionally straight after defeat, one suggested that now is the time for the club to “move on” and find an “upgrade” for the 30-year-old midfielder.

Another named him as Palace’s “best player” on the night, having caused his own teammates problems rather than push them forward like a much-needed captain.
