Aston Villa told to complete midfielder signing after manager’s reveal – pundit
Frank McAvennie has insisted Aston Villa won’t bring in players “for the sake of it”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said next season will be important for Villa and Steven Gerrard as the side will be looking to challenge for top six.
As quoted by Birmingham Live (22 July), Gerrard said the Villans’ work to bring in new players “can’t stop” yet.

The manager added that he wants his side to attract “top players” moving forward in order to try and disrupt the top players in the league.
On Saturday (23 July), Villa drew 2-2 in a pre-season friendly with Man United despite going two goals behind.
When asked where he thought the Birmingham club needed to strengthen, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Steven Gerrard has had a chance to have a look at the team.
“He knows a lot about football. He’s not going to bring anyone in just to be a squad player. He’ll want to bring somebody in that will adjust the team.
“I don’t know who they’re going to bring in but they need to bring in somebody in midfield. They need that quality and depth but they have to bring in quality. They can’t just bring somebody in for the sake of it.

“Aston Villa will have the resources to tap into anywhere in the world and get the kind of player Gerrard wants.
“It’s a big year for Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard because he’s got to be challenging for top six.“
