Aston Villa transfer news: Agbonlahor issues one-word verdict on Ollie Watkins sale after source’s reveal

Aston Villa will be under no pressure to sell Ollie Watkins in the summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer suggested Watkins would only leave if he has a release clause inserted into his contract.

A Villa source told Football Insider last Friday (4 March) that Steven Gerrard has privately accepted he may have to sign an upgrade on the striker this summer.

That has given Arsenal a huge boost in their pursuit of the England international as they look to sign a proven striker in the summer.

After a barren run, Watkins has refound his best form in recent weeks with goals in his last two Premier League games.

He has partnered Danny Ings in those games and Gerrard told club media today (8 March) he is “really excited” about the potential of the pair playing together.

Asked whether Aston Villa will cash in on Watkins this summer, Agbonlahor told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley: “No.”

He added: “I don’t think they will be worried about that one bit. Aston Villa don’t need any money, they’ve got very, very wealthy owners.

“If anybody wants to get Watkins it’s going to cost them a lot, a lot of money. Even then I don’t think Aston Villa sell.

“They wouldn’t have sold Grealish, the only reason he left was because of his release clause. Aston Villa want to build, they don’t want to sell.

“Watkins, John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, there is no chance of them leaving.”

Watkins has 21 Premier League goals in 60 games for Villa.

He is under contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2025.
