Aston Villa are expected to announce the signing of promising full-back Oscar Borg from West Ham after holding talks with the player, according to reports.
Borg, 18, was once dubbed ‘the next Gareth Bale’, but was told by the Hammers that he has no future at the London club.
The Birmingham Mail report that West Ham has not seen the development from Borg that they had hoped for and Villa are now prepared to swoop.
Borg met with Villa this week and the club are confident a deal will be announced soon after positive talks.
Villa have been scouting the left-back for the past two years and are prepared to offer Borg a two-year professional contract, say the Birmingham Mail.
Borg was on the books at AFC Wimbledon before being snapped up by West Ham’s academy aged 13.
The defender’s frightening pace and attacking tendencies caught the attention of Manchester United in 2014 and Borg completed a successful trial before seeing his move to Old Trafford collapse because compensation could not be agreed between the two clubs.
The Midlands club are facing the prospect of relegation into the Championship this season, so Borg’s progression to the first-team could be accelerated as Villa look to dramatically restructure their squad.
