Kieran Maguire: Aston Villa will be ‘delighted’ after top executive appointment confirmed

Aston Villa will be “delighted” with the appointment of Peter McCormick as interim chairman of the Premier League.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the politics behind the 69-year-old’s appointment.

The Premier League confirmed last Thursday (13 January) that McCormick would take the reins from 1 February.

Man City

He is a former lawyer, vice chairman of the FA, and was previously interim chair of the Premier League between 2014 and 2015.

He replaces the outgoing Garry Hoffman who was ousted after a backlash over the Newcastle United takeover last October (2021).

All 20 clubs voted in favour of his appointment and Maguire claims Villa will be happy to have a safe pair of hands at the helm.

“Villa don’t want anything controversial,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They’ll be delighted, but I still think that Hoffman got a raw deal.

He managed to get the broadcasters to roll over the TV deal for another three years, which guaranteed income.

“They did see off Super League too, although in my view that was down more to the fans.

“There were quite a few club owners who felt that his interest wasn’t necessarily with every club and therefore wanted a fresh pair of hands.

Aston Villa

Villa are currently 13th in the Premier League table after their 2-2 draw with Man United last Saturday (15 January).

They are next in action against the currently managerless Everton on Saturday (22 January).
