Aston Villa land £35m+ windfall after confirmed news – Stefan Borson

Aston Villa will make a minimum of £35million from their upcoming Champions League campaign after learning who they will face in the new-look league phase.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the £37million Newcastle United reported in their accounting notes for last year provided an indication on how much clubs with a lower coefficient can earn from the competition.

Villa booked their place in the Champions League after securing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

The Times reported on 27 August top Champions League clubs could be in line to make an extra £23million from the competition following the format change.

As per official Uefa documents released in March, group stage qualification is worth an immediate £16million to all the participants.

The number of clubs taking part is set to rise from 32 to 36, with the teams all competing in one single league competition and each side playing eight different opponents – four at home and four away.

Villa have learned they will face Young Boys, Bayern Munich, Bologna, Club Brugge, Juventus, RB Leipzig, Monaco and Celtic.

Aston Villa to earn more than Newcastle from Champions League

Borson revealed Unai Emery’s side can expect to earn around 20 per cent more than Newcastle made from the Champions League last season.

“I would expect them to make a minimum of £35-40million,” Borson told Football Insider.

“If they can qualify for the knockouts, then they can make a lot more.

“We know Newcastle I think reported £37million all in in their notes to their accounts for last year that they would make in the season just gone.

“That gave us a kind of preview as to what a club that’s got a relatively low coefficient will make.

“I think you can then probably add a little bit more, maybe another 20 per cent on top of that for Villa.

“I would be looking at that sort of number.”
