Aston Villa’s Digne sends ‘here we go’ message amid transfer, contract speculation

Lucas Digne has shared a new update via social media as speculation circulates around his future at Aston Villa.

The Frenchman has spent the last three-and-a-half years in the Midlands after joining from Everton back in January 2022, but is now entering the final year of his contract with the club.

Earlier this season, it was claimed that Aston Villa are planning to hold contract talks with Digne this summer, in the wake of interest from other clubs.

With the transfer widow now open, those links between the 31-year-old and clubs elsewhere are now starting to emerge.

Lucas Digne posts update amid Atletico Madrid links

It was recently suggested that Atletico Madrid are interested in the Aston Villa left-back as an alternative target to Liverpool’s Andy Robertson in their attempts to strengthen that position.

Indeed, Football Insider recently reported that Digne is already in talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential move to Spain ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, with the end of the summer break now on the horizon and pre-season not far away, the Frenchman is among the players now turning their focus towards pre-season.

Taking to his Instagram story, Digne posted an image of himself in the gym, with a caption that read: “C’est reparti”.

When translated, that message simply reads as “Here we go again”, with the Aston Villa man seemingly now getting ready to focus back on football once more.

Aston Villa facing fight to keep key left-back

Football Insider Verdict

Digne is a strong option at left-back at this level, and the fact they are planning to hold contract talks suggests his current club are keen to keep him.

However, the chance to move to Atletico where he can play in the Champions League and compete for trophies is going to be appealing for the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, with Aston Villa having been denied qualification for European football’s top competition, they now find themselves under considerable financial pressure.

That leaves them with a need to sell this summer, and his contract situation means as things stand, Digne is one player where they could be under pressure to sanction a sale.

With that in mind, it feels far from certain that the left-back will be at Aston Villa once the market closes at the start of September.
