Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey reacts to Morgan Rogers amid Spurs links

Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey could be set to join Spurs amid the club’s precarious financial position.

Ramsey was not a regular starter for Villa last season, and the 24-year-old wants to restart his career with a move away from the club and Spurs are interested in a deal.

With Villa needing to sell player this summer to get around financial rules, academy product Ramsey would mean the club keep all the profits of any sale.

Unai Emery’s side missed out on Champions League football on goal difference last season, and have instead qualified for the Europa League following their sixth placed Premier League finish.

Rogers could follow Ramsey out of Villa

Rogers could also be a big departure from Villa this summer, but the club want to keep the midfielder and have put a £100million price tag on the 22-year-old.

Taking to Instagram, Rogers shared pictures of him returning for pre-season training, which Ramsey liked.

Rogers was the club’s second top goal scorer after Ollie Watkins last season, netting 14 goals in all competitions in 54 appearances.

Emery could face toughest season yet

Football Insider Verdict

Emery could have a significantly weaker squad next season if the club are not able to stop key players leaving.

Villa haven’t been forced into a departure yet, but increased scrutiny from UEFA over their finances mean stars may have to leave or otherwise a ban from European competition could come into force.

New Spurs boss Thomas Frank is an admirer of Ramsey and wants to increase depth in his squad ahead of his first season in North London after completing the signing of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.

Rogers though is Villa’s prized asset they cannot afford to lose, with his creativity and productivity in midfield pivotal.

Striker Watkins is also the subject of interest whilst number one Emi Martinez could also depart to a Premier League rival.

The funds recouped from any sales would help Emery bring in players, but the quality may drop considering their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

This season could be Emery’s toughest to navigate yet with all the teams around them strengthening their squads.

It could be a challenge for Villa to compete in the Europa League and sustain a push for the top five in the Premier League.
