Paul Robinson gushed about Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez following his performance in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Blackburn and Leeds United keeper stated that he thought Fernandez submitted a Man of the Match display against the champions on Saturday.

The 30-year-old centre-back was making his fifth consecutive league start for the Magpies on Saturday after previously playing no part in the four games prior.

Robinson shared he believes Fernandez was at the top of his game against Pep Guardiola’s side based on how he marshalled the defence.

When asked about Fernandez’s display against Man City, Robinson told Football Insider: “The Newcastle back-five were all outstanding, especially for me Fernandez.

“I thought he was at the top of his game, he marshalled the defence, looked comfortable on the ball and I think he made it easy for Manquillo as he played alongside him.

“Fernandez got given the nod ahead of him (Fabian Schar) and I think he was Newcastle’s Man of the Match at the weekend.

“I think it was a game where there were two fantastic goals from Shelvey and De Bruyne but no one really stood out for an individual performance.

“I think Fernandez and Willems were the two standout performers and for me, Fernandez was Man of the Match.”

Fernandez was struggling to feature for Steve Bruce’s side at the start of the 2019/20 campaign as he managed to play only 23 minutes of action across the club’s opening nine league matches.

The Argentinian enforcer has been at St James’ Park since joining the Magpies from Swansea City in August 2018, with him arriving at the club after the Swans’ relegation.
