Barcelona fans furious with official statement: ‘Madness’
Barcelona fans have viewed the European Super League project as a potential route to restoring financial stability at their club.
The La Liga giants have seen success on the field in recent weeks, and currently sit top of the Spanish division with one point over Real Madrid.
Hans Flick has turned Barcelona back into winners since he arrived at the club in May of 2024, all while still having to navigate around off-the-field issues.
Barcelona have been in financial trouble in recent times, and the European Super League could have proved to be a huge help for Joan Laporta.
However, the Culers’ announcement of their own withdrawal from the project hasn’t gone down well with supporters.
Barcelona fans rage at decision to withdraw from European Super League
In an official statement on Saturday, Barcelona confirmed that they have informed the European Super League Company of their withdrawal from the project.
The statement read: “FC Barcelona hereby announces that today it has formally notified the European Super League Company and the clubs involved of its withdrawal from the European Super League project.”
Barcelona were one of the supporting clubs for the European Super League, and even when other sides like English teams previously withdrew, they stood by the project.
After the news broke, it seems like some Barca fans may feel like their club has had to surrender to UEFA, since the threat of bans from the Champions League, Europa League, and other competitions left the Culers with little real choice.
One Barcelona fan said: “Great. This is madness that a president of the club creates a new league. Where is objectivity?”
Another Barca fan said: “What a weak and corrupt club.”
Now, Barcelona face even further problems with Real Madrid, still well and truly at the heart of plans for the European Super League.
What Real Madrid now have over Barcelona
Real Madrid are the only major club left in the European Super League, and many Barca fans are not too happy about that for one reason or another.
Los Blancos now pose a worry to Barca supporters due to their relationship with UEFA, and some are suggesting that Madrid can have bargaining power moving forward.
Even if the European Super League doesn’t officially launch, Real Madrid are still at the table to spearhead any other plans to reform European competitions, which may work to their advantage.
Given Barca’s struggles of late, it’s a bold move for Laporta to make, especially considering he was a key advocate for the project in the first place.
It could mean that Madrid continues to benefit over Barca financially in the years to come, but time will tell.
