Barely-seen Rangers player tipped to start v Livi in new role after Barisic 'curveball' - pundit

Alan Hutton has tipped Jack Simpson to fill in at left-back for Rangers against Livingston with Borna Barisic injured.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted Steven Gerrard had been thrown a “curveball” with Calvin Bassey also out through suspension.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Gerrard confirmed Barisic would miss out against Livingston with a quad injury.

The 28-year-old picked up the problem in the 4-1 win over Celtic and was replaced by Scott Wright on the day.

Bassey, Gerrard’s second-choice left-back, is currently suspended for breaching lockdown protocols earlier this year.

As such, Hutton suggested Simpson, a centre-back by trade, would fill in at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

“It’s a difficult one, I didn’t even think of it, to be honest,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“It is a tough one. It’s a curveball, to be fair. I’m not sure what Gerrard will do. Simpson can play, he’s left-sided, he could slot in back there and they could bring someone else in at centre-half.

“I’m not sure, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s stumped me. This is why Gerrard’s the manager. He will have a plan. Even though I’m sitting here stumped, he’ll know what he’s going to do.

“He sees his players week in, week out on the training pitch. He’ll know who can slot in there. It’s an opportunity for whoever.”

Simpson has only started twice for Rangers, both at centre-back, since joining from Bournemouth back in January.

He has a total of five appearances under his belt for the Glasgow giants, three of which have come in the league.
