Barisic could be a ‘tremendous steal’ as Rangers stance revealed after bid – McLeish

Alex McLeish has claimed Rangers defender Borna Barisic would be a “tremendous steal” for any interested clubs at £5million.

The former Gers manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Light Blues’ demands for the 29-year-old are “pretty cheap”.

As reported by the Daily Record on Tuesday (4 January), Rangers have set a £5million asking price on Barisic’s head after rejecting a £2million offer from Watford.

The Hornets reportedly returned with an offer worth a total of £3.5million with add-ons and bonuses which was also rebuffed.

McLeish suggested the £5million asking price was a bargain for someone of Barisic’s age and quality.

“It’s pretty cheap in the going market just now, when you think about it,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“How old is Barisic now? 29? He’s probably getting towards the peak of his career. I would say over the next two or three years he can really play his peak.

“So I’d say that’s a tremendous steal at that kind of price.”

Barisic has been Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first-choice left-back since the change of manager at Ibrox.

He has started all but one game under his new boss.

The Croatia international’s contract at Ibrox runs until 2024, having signed an extension in 2020.

Barisic has played a total of 134 times for Rangers to date, with seven goals and 34 assists under his belt.

Calvin Bassey had featured regularly at left-back during Steven Gerrard’s final months in Glasgow.

However, the 22-year-old has since been moved into a centre-back role under Van Bronckhorst.
