‘Bayern Munich strike back over Florian Wirtz as Liverpool talks open’

Cody Gakpo has become a favourite at Liverpool since arriving from PSV in January 2023, forming a vital part of Arne Slot’s first-choice front three.

An integral member of Slot’s title-winning side last season, Gakpo bagged 18 goals in all competitions and netted in the 5-1 win over Tottenham that ensured the Premier League trophy was heading to Anfield.

The Netherlands international has now hit 41 goals in 128 games for Liverpool and has proved a more astute signing than Darwin Nunez – who signed for the Reds just months earlier.

Having signed on Merseyside for a reported fee of between £35-45million, Gakpo’s stock has risen considerably since his arrival in England.

Liverpool could now face a tough decision on Gakpo’s future with transfer interest crystalising in Europe.

Bayern to get revenge for Liverpool’s Wirtz swoop?

Liverpool may have dealt a blow to transfer rivals Bayern Munich as they look set to win the race for Florian Wirtz, but the German giants could strike back by turning Gakpo’s head this summer.

According to Kicker (5 June), Bayern have now made contact with the forward as they look to refresh their attack.

It is claimed Gakpo is valued by Liverpool at more than £60million, with the Bundesliga champions needing to sell players before launching a potential move.

The report also suggests AC Milan star Rafael Leao is a potential target for the Bavaria-based outfit.

Bayern, who were dumped out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage against Inter Milan, are preparing to lose Leroy Sane on a free transfer this summer.

Football Insider Verdict

Bayern Munich’s interest may be flattering for Gakpo but it is certainly in Liverpool‘s best interests to keep him at the club.

He clearly enjoys a good relationship with Slot, while his versatility will be needed if the Reds – as expected – bin Darwin Nunez this summer.

Luis Diaz could also be on the chopping block at Anfield if a big-money offer arrives from Barcelona or the Saudi Pro League.

Gakpo has three years left to run on his deal and at 26, his value could bloom even more ahead of a potential sale further down the line.

Meanwhile, Diaz is 28 with just two years on his deal and Liverpool will be desperate to cash in on Nunez before his value plummets further.
