BBC journalist provides fascinating update on Aston Villa striker pursuit after move made

By Amir Mir

Aston Villa have received an emphatic response after making an enquiry about Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes, according to a reliable journalist.

BBC Midlands reporter Pat Murphy has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the 26-year-old won’t be making a switch to Villa Park.

This is a fascinating update on the Midlands club’s pursuit situation of the Scotsman after the Sun claimed on Wednesday that Steve Bruce had tabled a bid worth£10million for the player.

It is said by the Sun that Villa offered a £6million-plus-add-ons for Rhodes but Boro have put a price tag of £12million on their player.

Rhodes, who has a very healthy record in the Championship, has been struggling for form and game time at the Riverside Stadium this season.

He is behind Spaniard Alvaro Negrado in the pecking order as well as January acquisition Rudy Gestede who was purchased by the north-east club from Villa.

At this moment in time, Villa have two strike options to choose from, Ross McCormack and Gabby Agbonlahor.

Key striker Jonathan Kodjia and versatile attacker Jordan Ayew are currently away on international duty.

Football Insider verdict:

Steve Bruce should not be too concerned about missing out on Jordan Rhodes, especially considering the price tag slapped on him by the Middlesbrough owners. However, after starting the new year without scoring a goal in three games and losing all of those matches, Bruce should be worried about that. The January transfer window is past the half way stage and the Midlands club have yet to purchase an outfield. More worryingly, no attacker or playmaker has been added to the ranks which will begin to concern the Villa Park faithful. Bruce’s side are ten points adrift of the top six and they will drop further away if no-one is added in this window.
