BBC journalist: England international close to deal to be at Leeds next season

By Alex Stevens

Rob Green is likely to trigger an appearance clause in his contract that will keep him at Leeds next season, according to a reliable journalist.

BBC correspondent Adam Pope explained that Green’s future was one topic discussed at manager Garry Monk’s weekly media briefing on Thursday.

It has yet to be confirmed that the veteran goalkeeper will be handed a new deal by the club but Pope reported on his personal Twitter account that the player said “earlier in the season that if he players a certain number of games he earns another year at Leeds”.

It appears inevitable that the 12-times England international will be handed a 12-month extension as he has been an ever-present for Leeds in the Championship this season.

Green, 37, has started all 36 of the team’s league encounters and is on course to play every minute of their 46-match campaign.

Given that he also had a 30-match appearance clause in his QPR contract last season, which was not activated by the Londons as Green was not selected after January, he is set to remain at the Yorkshire giants in 2017-18.

Former Norwich, West Ham and QPR keeper Green is in line to make his 600th league appearance against former club QPR at Elland Road on Saturday.

The former England international, 37, has won many of the Leeds fans over with his performances in recent months after a difficult start to his career at the club following his free transfer.

Manager Monk is in no doubt about the effectiveness of the goalkeeper and how his experience has been crucial to the team’s success.

“Making his 600th league appearance is a fantastic achievement, it just shows what a professional he is,” said Monk on Thursday afternoon, as quoted by the official Leeds Twitter account.

“Rob has done exceptionally well this season, like everyone else, performing at a high level and lending his experience.”
