BBC pundit delivers damning verdict on Liverpool boss Klopp

By Aramide Oladipo

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has questioned Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at the club and claimed that “they have not improved since the day he took over.”

The German was appointed as the man in charge of the Merseyside club in October 2015 after the Reds had sacked previous boss Brendan Rodgers.

During his debut campaign, Klopp led Liverpool to the League Cup and Europa League final but he failed to lift any silverware losing to Manchester City and Sevilla respectively.

Last season, in his first full campaign at the club, Klopp guided the Reds to Champions League qualification with a fourth-placed finish – the first time they managed to achieve that feat in three years.

Despite this, Shearer remains sceptical of Klopp’s influence on Merseyside and he believes that the German is not the right man to lead them to the Premier League title.

“It is two years since Jurgen Klopp took charge with Liverpool lying tenth after eight games of the 2015-16 season,” he wrote in his column for the Sun.

“Today they sit seventh after seven games — hardly giant strides.

“But really they have not improved since the day he took over.

“He has a win rate of 49.5 per cent, which is less than Brendan Rodgers and also less than David Moyes when United sacked him.

“Yet too much under Klopp seems to be based on that call for passion and excitement.

“They play one way and it is not going to win them the league — great going forward on their day but they simply cannot defend.”

The Reds have endured a disappointing start to the season, only winning three of their opening seven Premier League matches.

Liverpool have also failed to pick up victories in their first Champions League games, drawing at home to Sevilla and away against Spartak Moscow.

Klopp’s side will hope to get back on track when they welcome bitter rivals Manchester United to Anfield on the weekend.

In other Liverpool news, Kevin Keegan has made a bizarre claim about the Reds’ defence.
