BBC pundit hails influence of unsung Tottenham 24-year-old

Pat Nevin has highlighted the qualities of Tottenham’s attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen and feels his contribution can sometimes be overshadowed by the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

The 24-year-old is an ever-present in the Spurs side and is regarded as an important player by manager Mauricio Pochettino, but his team-mates Alli and Kane have taken most of the plaudits.

He has already made 30 appearances across all competitions for the north London club this season, scoring seven goals and supplying nine assists.

Eriksen’s Premier League tally of eight assists is only bettered by Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and shows how important he is to the Spurs side.

BBC pundit Nevin described Eriksen as the “beating heart” of the team and believes he is a fantastic player.

“I think Christian Eriksen is in many ways the beating heart of the Tottenham side,” Nevin told BBC Sport. “At the moment it’s only Kevin De Bruyne who has actually had more assists than him this season.

“You tend to forget that with all the noise going around Dele Alli and Kane. He is just coming into his peak, he has really powered up and is really strong.”

Eriksen has played a major role in helping Spurs reach second in the league table and his team are now considered the main contenders to title favourites Chelsea.

Spurs travel to Anfield on Saturday for a Premier League clash with Liverpool and will go just six points behind Chelsea with a victory.

Eriksen will be hoping to get back in the goals at the weekend as he has not scored in the league since a brace against Hull on 14 December, but has contributed five assists since.

The Denmark international has been deployed in both wide and central positions this season, but continues to be a threat wherever he plays.
