BBC sports editor tells Leeds fans to prepare for major announcement

By Alex Stevens

BBC Sports editor Dan Roan has told Leeds supporters to brace themselves for a major announcement.

The corporation’s most senior sports correspondent took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to drop a huge hint that the club are about to confirm the completion of Andrea Radrizzani’s takeover of the club.

In a suggestive message to his followers, Roan urged Leeds fans to “stand by”, in a clear sign that he has been given information that an announcement is imminent.

Italian businessman Radrizzani, who co-founded sports media agency MP & Silva in 2004, has been in talks to invest in the Championship club since August 2016.

He broke cover in November to reveal that he was in advanced negotiations to take a majority stake in the Championship giants after extensive discussions with current owner Massimo Cellino.

It now appears that Radrizzani has been given the green light by the English football authorities to take over the club from his fellow Italian.

Radrizzani’s timing is exemplary given the team’s improved form under Garry Monk and the fact that Cellino was last month slapped with a ban from football for 18 months for breaching agent regulations.

The FA have ordered that the controversial Cellino has no involvement in the running of a club for 18 months, with the suspension due to come into effect from February 2017.

Leeds are flying high in the Championship after a series of outstanding results in Monk, including four wins and a draw from their last five league games.

The Yorkshire club’s win over Rotherham on Monday consolidated their position of fifth in the second tier and further emphasised their promotion credentials.

Leeds’ next game is an FA Cup trip to Cambridge United next Monday.

In other Leeds news, these are the first two signings that incoming new owner Radrizzani will make in the January transfer window.
