Begovic shares why Tottenham results are irrelevant after Chelsea title blow

By Harry Sykes

Asmir Begovic has insisted that Tottenham’s results are irrelevant if Chelsea immediately return to winning ways.

The goalkeeper was recalled to the team for Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United due to an injury to No1 Thibaut Courtois.

Begovic conceded goals to Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera as United’s Old Trafford triumph reignited the title race.

Chelsea’s second defeat in four Premier League matches has coincided with some dazzling performances by Spurs, whose 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth on Saturday was their seventh consecutive league win.

Begovic admitted that United were more committed than Chelsea and deserving of victory but is not concerned about the bigger picture of Spurs narrowing the gap to four points with six matches remaining.

“I think the defeat is down to a combination of things. United were more aggressive, they won second balls and probably wanted it more,” the goalkeeper said, as quoted by the Telegraph.

“They got a great start and then went on from there. We need to be better going forward. We have a lot of match-winners, it was not just a case of Eden Hazard being man marked and taken out the game.

“We weren’t at it today but we have a lot of character and can bounce back. We have a four-point advantage and at the start of the season we would have taken it at this stage. If win our games it doesn’t matter what Spurs do.”

Spurs and Chelsea are not in league action for another nine days but go head to head in a mouthwatering FA Cup semi-final showdown at Wembley on Saturday evening.

The two London giants will be playing for a place in the final rather than league points but the match could have a considerable psychological impact on the title race.

In other Tottenham transfer news, the club have sensationally terminated the contract of one of their defenders.
