Benitez has Everton green light for January signings after confirmed news – pundit
Rafael Benitez has won his war at Everton following the dismissal of Marcel Brands – and has the mandate to recruit the players he wants in January.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the recent shakeup at Goodison Park.
On 5 December, Everton confirmed Brands, 59, had been relieved of his duties as director of football.
This came as criticism from Everton fans reached a fever pitch after last Wednesday’s (1 December) 4-1 loss to Liverpool.
This coincided with the Toffees recording an eight-game winless streak.
McAvennie claims results will start to improve now Benitez has “complete control” at Goodison.
“Rafa got them a great result the other night didn’t he?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Benitez won that war with his director of football. I imagine he had a big say in that decision.
“We saw that conflict when he was at Newcastle but he didn’t manage to beat Mike Ashley, no one has managed that.
“Benitez has won his war. He wants to oversee everything, that’s when he’s at his best. He has complete control now.
“So he will get January and he will sign his own players. Then he’s under pressure.
“Rafa works best when he is fully in control. I think we will start to see improvements and Everton quickly climb the league once he has had the chance to bring his own guys in.”

Brands has overseen the big-money signings of Richarlison, Alex Iwobi, Yerry Mina and Moise Kean.
Only Richarlison has been a regular feature for the Blues this season.
