Newcastle United have reportedly received a £10million bid from Stoke City for attacker Dwight Gayle and manger Rafael Benitez should give the green light to sell him.
The Daily Mail reports in its live transfer blog (12:21pm, 16 June) that Stoke have made their offer, as they prepare for life back in the Championship are relegation from the top flight.
It is understood that the Magpies are willing to offload the 27-year-old this summer, but they may need to improve their bid to sign him.
However, Newcastle should consider £10million a decent price for a player that is not quite cut out for Premier League level and is far more effective in England’s second-tier of football.
An extra £10million in the transfer kitty would allow Benitez to go out to sign a top centre-forward and they are in need a massive revamp of their striker options at St James’ Park.
Gayle played a crucial role in promotion during the 2016/17 season, but once again he was just found wanting when featuring in the Premier League.
His work-rate, speed and attitude can’t be faulted, but Newcastle quite frankly need better if they want to establish themselves as as top-10 side in the top flight.
Gayle managed six goals in 38 games across all competitions in the most recent season and sanctioning his exit for an eight-figure fee makes perfect sense.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, six teams are in the hunt to sign the club’s colossus on loan.
