Benitez set to scrape barrel after worrying Newcastle transfer update - report
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez looks set to be scraping around for a culmination of loan deals and budget buys in the January transfer window as he is set to be handed a meagre £20million budget, according to a report.
The Express claim on their website that the Spanish boss is eyeing up temporary moves for Manchester United left back Luke Shaw and Liverpool striker Danny Ings in the upcoming window, as he tries to bring in recruits to bolster his squad on Tyneside.
The report states that the ongoing takeover talks between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley look to extend past the end of the January market, and that he will be handed a modest kitty of just £20million by the current owner.
That number will be seen as worryingly low for both Benitez and the Newcastle faithful, with the Spanish boss having already insisted that his side needs major improvements if they are to remain in the Premier League this season.
He was just as vocal during the summer window, demonstrating his frustrations at the club’s inability to secure his top targets, and was instead left routing around for bargain buys, which is likely to be the case again with £20million less funding than he was backed with in the off-season.

Both Shaw and Ings would be a huge improvement on what the club already have at their disposal but loan signings are not the way to establish future success on Tyneside. They did well to tie down Mikel Merino to a five-year contract after an initial loan spell and they need more deals like those in the near future. The Magpies would never be able to afford Ings’ or Shaw’s wages right now and that is why a temporary swoop seems likely. Perhaps in the future, under new ownership, things might change, but a £20million budget seems awfully low for a team fighting for their lives in the top flight.
