'Absolutely superb' - Shearer drools over Liverpool man who didn't get in team for most of 17/18

By Richard Parks
Alan Shearer drooled over the performance of Andrew Robertson as he hailed him as “the best player on the pitch” in Liverpool’s demolition of West Ham.
The Match of the Day pundit claimed on Saturday night that the left-back has turned around his Anfield career in the last two months after seizing on his first-team opportunity.
Robertson made just three Liverpool appearances in the first four months of the season as he found himself behind Alberto Moreno in the pecking order and couldn’t even make the matchday squad for Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
But the Scotland international, 23, has taken advantage of the injury suffered by Moreno at the start of December and has impressed observers with his performances, including in the 4-1 triumph over West Ham at Anfield on Saturday.
“I thought he was the best player on the pitch,” Shearer told the Match of the Day programme. “He had a bit of a slow start to his Anfield career but has started 13 of the last 14 games. He was absolutely superb. Pace, energy and provided great quality and defended up and down the left hand side.
“He’s strong in the tackle and drove the team forward, produced some excellent deliveries. He found it tough to begin with, but is showing great quality now.”
Football Insider verdict:
What a turnaround for Robertson’s Liverpool career, although many fans were miffed that he couldn’t even get in the squad for more than half of the season. Sure, Moreno has improved and is no longer the liability he once was, but the Scot is just as good as his rival in the final third – his delivery is consistently better – and a far more solid defender. Liverpool have made some brilliant signings in the last two windows, and can reflect that Robertson was certainly one of them.
