Better than Ozil: Three things we learned about Tottenham from win against Chelsea

By Amir Mir

Football Insider analyses the three talking points as Tottenham beat Premier League leaders Chelsea 2-0 at White Hart Lane.

Dele Alli is better than Mesut Ozil

The 20-year-old is once again showing why he is one of the best midfielders in the country, if not the best. Alli’s goalscoring touch ensures he outshines his north London compatriot Mesut Ozil. The England international may not have the passing ability of the German, but in big games and during big occasions, Alli proves that he is more of a goalscoring threat. The former MK Dons player had a quiet first half, but in the dying moments, he was able to produce a moment of magic when his magnificent header beat the diving Thibaut Courtois. Alli’s movement was once again on show after the break when he once again doubled his side’s lead with a brilliant header. That is six goals in his last three games, simply remarkable from the youngster.

Home form paramount to top four finish

Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain unbeaten at White Hart Lane in the Premier League this season. They have beaten the likes of Manchester City and West Ham in front of their own support. Spurs can now add current leaders Chelsea to that list following their impressive win against Antonio Conte’s side. They have won seven out of their nine league games and if they continue that run then they can almost guarantee themselves a top-four finish.

The magnificent and underrated Victor Wanyama

Spurs purchased the midfield powerhouse from Southampton during the summer for a fee of £11 million. The 25-year-old is repaying every penny of that fee as proven against Chelsea at White Hart Lane. Wanyama’s ability to break up play, keep Eden Hazard quiet throughout the match and pick out the correct pass, ensured he was the best player on the pitch. He was not the only one who produced a magnificent defensive display, but his strength and ability to intercept at the right moments stood out.
