Newcastle are firmly in the running to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney this summer, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
Bet Victor have priced the newly-promoted club at 8/1 to land the 28-year-old before the transfer window shuts on 3 September.
Premier League outfit West Brom are the favourites to sign the Birmingham-born front man at 3/1.
Tony Pulis’ side are ahead of Newcastle in the betting, with both clubs a long way clear of Leicester (25/1), Birmingham and Leeds United (both 33/1).
Deeney has been a hugely influential figure for Watford since joining in 2010, scoring 106 goals in 300 matches and making the step up to the Premier League with real aplomb in the last two seasons.
The striker has scored 10 league goals in 37 matches this season to follow up his excellent debut campaign, which yielded 15 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions.
Football Insider verdict:
What a brilliant signing Deeney would be for Newcastle. He would instantly inject the attack with much-needed proven Premier League quality, as well as providing a talismanic physical presence, leadership, no-holds-barred commitment and an eye for goal. Deeney dropped to the Watford bench last weekend and could be looking for a new challenge at a club where he would be worshipped if he produced the goods. It could be a great deal for both parties.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club have hijacked Everton’s move for a coveted 23-year-old, with a £75,000-a-week contract to be offered.
