Everton attacker Wayne Rooney could be Steven Gerrard’s first signing at Rangers, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
BetVictor have Rooney, 32, priced at 10/1 to be the first arrival at Ibrox when Gerrard takes the reins at the end of the season.
Fenerbahce and Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel (4/1) is the most-likely player to join the Liverpool legend’s revolution in Glasgow over the coming weeks and months, but Rooney is second in the running at this stage.
The Washington Post has reported that the former England and Manchester United forward is currently in “serious talks” about signing for MLS franchise DC United in the summer window after a miserable season at Everton.
The Daily Mail reported last summer that Rooney agreed a £150,000-a-week deal at Goodison Park, but a year on from agreeing that, he could be on his way out.
Football Insider verdict
It would be pretty ridiculous to imagine that Rooney could be a Rangers player next season, but there’s absolutely no chance of this happening. Rooney will demand massive fees and his arrival would probably even eclipse that of Gerrard and Paul Gasxoigne’s moves to Ibrox. There will be a lot of names linked with the Gers over the summer and Rooney’s will probably be the most far-fetched of the bunch. His mega-wages and ability means that he has to be playing elsewhere and right now, the MLS is a perfect fit. Football has outgrown Rooney’s style of play. If he was around 20 odd years ago at this age, he would probably be one of the better players on the planet. He cannot keep up with the Premier League anymore and it just seems as though there’s no position that suits the way he plays. He’s had a rough few years and it’s unlikely that anyone would give him much stick for moving across the Atlantic for the rest of his playing days.
