Bid tabled for £31m forward after extensive Everton talks - reports

By Alex Stevens

Lyon have tabled a bid for long-standing Everton January target Memphis Depay, according to a reliable journalist.

The Mail reported on Wednesday that the Merseysiders are still working on a deal to land the Holland international after tying up the £24million signing of Morgan Schneiderlin.

It is said that Everton are “still in talks” with Manchester United about landing a second player from the Premier League giants.

But Ronald Koeman’s team face competition from France for Depay, who has been sidelined by United and is almost certain to leave the club either on loan or permanently this month.

BBC Sport correspondent Simon Stone, who covers United for the network, reported on his personal Twitter account on Thursday night that Lyon had a “bid for Memphis rejected by Man United last week” and emphasised the point again on Friday morning.

Stone did not detail the value of the bid but added that if the reported £13million figure was correct it was “little wonder Jose [Mourinho] was so irritated”.

The 22-year-old moved to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015 in a deal costing £31million, according to the BBC Sport website.

Depay’s fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman revealed last month that he is interested in taking the wide forward to Everton and it has been widely reported that Everton have held extensive talks about a deal.

The Merseysiders have been one of the most active Premier League clubs in the January market and have already pushed through the signings of Schneiderlin and winger Ademola Lookman from Charlton.

Depay’s reputation has nosedived following an unproductive 18 months at Old Trafford and he has slipped further down the pecking order under Mourinho, with his eight appearances this season amounting to just 134 minutes of action.

The Dutch forward has not been selected for the team since October and has not even made the matchday squad since November.

By contrast, he was prolific for PSV, where he shot to attention after scoring 50 goals and providing 29 assists in 124 matches for the club.
