Kevin Phillips believes Rodrigo could start for Leeds United against Wolves on Monday night ahead of Tyler Roberts.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the 1999/2000 Premier League golden boot winner believes the Whites’ record signing has now got used to the demands of the Premier League.
Roberts and Rodrigo have shared the number 10 role in Marcelo Bielsa’s side while Pablo Hernandez has been out injured.
Hernandez has been absent since Leeds’ opening day defeat to Liverpool but Bielsa confirmed on Friday that he is fit to play at Molineux.
Rodrigo replaced Roberts at half-time against Manchester City before the international break and scored his first goal for the club to earn Leeds a point.
Asked by Football Insider whether he now expects the Spaniard to start on Monday night, Phillips said: “He could do, yes.
“I think Bielsa is being clever with Rodrigo.
“It’s always tough and I said that it’ll either go one way or the other. He’ll come in and hit the ground running or he might struggle a little bit.
“I think he’s struggled early, he’s used him sparingly, comes off the bench and does really well (against Manchester City) and maybe it might be time for him to start a game.
“He’s got used to the pace, he’s got used to what the Premier League is like and he’s made an impression against arguably one of the best teams in the world.
“So, yes it wouldn’t surprise me if he started the match definitely.”
Both Rodrigo and Roberts played for their countries in the international break.
Roberts played the full 90 minutes in Wales’ games against England and Bulgaria while Rodrigo started Spain’s games against Portugal and Ukraine.
