Marcelo Bielsa’s comments on his Leeds United future are brilliant to hear but he’ll leave if a bigger club wants him in the summer.
That’s according to former Sunderland man Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Bielsa’s recent quotes.
Bielsa recently made a rare comment on his future as Leeds boss with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
Speaking in the last week, The Athletic quote Bielsa as saying, “I go from day to day thinking I’m going to be here the rest of my life.”
Phillips admits that these quotes will be good to hear for Leeds fans but doubts Bielsa would stay at Leeds if a club like Real Madrid came calling.
Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “It’s easy to come out and say those things. What if Real Madrid come knocking in the summer, do you think he’d stay?
“I’m not going to criticise. It’s brilliant to hear that, he’s done wonders there and he’s been a fantastic servant so far.
“They’re exciting and a lot of that is down to the manager. His training routines, the way he’s moulded the club.
“The way the players work their socks off. There’s a philosophy you have to buy into if you want to join Leeds.
“I don’t see him moving anywhere soon but football is football. He’s built a reputation and anything can happen.
“He’ll want to see that team play in the Premier League with a crowd and that might even persuade him to stay a little bit longer because that lot can be noisy.”
Bielsa’s Leeds currently occupy 12th place in the Premier League table with survival all but confirmed.
He has already spent more time at Leeds than any other club he has managed despite so far managing less than three seasons at Elland Road.
