Bielsa tipped to axe Roberts v Man City after early Leeds team news - Whelan

Joe Gelhardt is in line to make his second Leeds United start against Man City tonight, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 19-year-old could replace Tyler Roberts, 22, in the starting XI.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, as quoted by Leeds Live (13 December), Marcelo Bielsa insisted there are no new injury returnees ahead of the match at the Etihad Stadium.

Therefore Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford, Pascal Struijk, Robin Koch, Rodrigo, and Kalvin Phillips will all be absent.

Gelhardt netted his first Premier League goal in Saturday’s loss against Chelsea after coming off the bench in the 82nd minute.

When asked about any potential changes ahead of tonight’s game, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Obviously we don’t have the luxury to change seven or eight players like maybe Chelsea or Man City.

“We have to put out the best and most competitive team we can, and if that is the same side which started the game against Chelsea – then so be it.

“There is a real case for Gelhardt to come in and start after his cameo and goal. He’ll be really fresh and full of running, maybe Tyler Roberts can come onto that bench for a rest. I can see that happening.

“We can’t go to Man City fearful. We know the strength in depth they have, we know the possession they will have – so we need to be more disciplined.

“We’ve got nothing to lose in this game, so we need to take the game to them just as we did against Chelsea at the weekend.”

Gelhardt made his first Leeds United start last month as the Yorkshire side lost away at Tottenham.

The Whites sit 15th in the Premier League.
