Noel Whelan believes Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa will start Rodrigo in their next game after his incredible impact from the bench against Manchester City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan delivered his verdict after the 29-year-old scored his first goal of the season against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Rodrigo replaced Tyler Roberts in the number 10 role after 56 minutes and scored Leeds’ equaliser just three minutes later as they earned a 1-1 draw with City.
The Spanish international was Bielsa’s first major addition of the transfer window with Leeds paying an initial £27million for his services in August.
He had flattered to deceive in his early Leeds performances and has only started one Premier League games.
However, Whelan believes the game against Manchester City could represent a turning point for Rodrigo’s Leeds career.
He told Football Insider: “We’re seeing a better and better Rodrigo now after what we saw against Manchester City, that’s for sure.
“He should have been starting against Manchester City in my opinion.
“That’s something in my mind that Marcelo Bielsa will change in the next game because you can’t leave out a goalscorer and you can’t leave out somebody who has had that kind of impression when he came into the game against Manchester City.
“That kind of game was made for him in my opinion with that style of play and the players that were out there on the field.
“Now that he’s got the goal, the weight is off his shoulders.
“He looks stronger, fitter, quicker and we’re starting to see that intelligent football player linking up play, the passing, the movement and the hunger was definitely there the other day.”
