Frank McAvennie has claimed Leeds United Marcelo Bielsa “will not be happy” after Illan Meslier’s agent suggested his client could leave the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham and Celtic striker said “Leeds are a huge club” and questioned why the 21-year-old or any other player would want to move.
Xavier Fleury, Meslier’s agent, told the LUFC Fan Zone podcast that “big clubs” might come knocking for his client in the summer transfer window.
He suggested that a move to Real Madrid would be hard for the French goalkeeper, who has two-and-a-half years on his contract at Elland Road, to turn down in a season’s time.
Meslier has produced a number of eye-catching displays in his debut Premier League campaign and only West Brom’s Sam Johnstone has saved more shots in Europe’s top five league’s this season. (Wyscout)
When asked for his thoughts on the goalkeeper’s agent’s comments, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Bielsa will not be happy with that.
“Leeds are a huge club so I do not get why he would want to leave.
“You would think Leeds United can compete financially with most of the big clubs now that they are back in the Premier League.
“Leeds are a huge club, they are not a mid-table club. Stature-wise they are up there.”
Speaking to LUFC Fan Zone podcast, Fleury said: “When you are so young, the youngest starting goalkeeper in Europe, for sure, big clubs could be interested, following him.
“Illan is starting at Leeds. He loves the club. Perhaps in one, two seasons, if you have a club like Real Madrid that knock on the door, who knows?”
