Billy Dodds has already warned Rangers about ‘unreal’ candidate after Steven Gerrard snub

Rangers are still on the lookout for Russell Martin’s successor, and they’ve already been warned against one candidate.

After a nightmare spell in charge at Ibrox, Martin was sacked by Rangers following their 1-1 draw against Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

Statistically, one of the worst managers in Rangers’ history, supporters were over the moon when the Scotsman was given his marching orders and even more excited when Gerrard emerged as a leading candidate for the Gers job.

Sadly, after being touted with a sensational return to the club, Gerrard rejected Rangers, and now the hierarchy are eyeing up someone else.

Billy Dodds warns Rangers about Danny Rohl

Football Insider revealed on October 6 that Danny Rohl is open to taking the Rangers job, with the former Sheffield Wednesday boss emerging as a frontrunner.

Rohl did a miraculous job at Wednesday under difficult circumstances, achieving Championship survival in 2023/24 before guiding the Owls to a 12th place finish.

However, despite his success at Hillsborough, Rangers hero Billy Dodds thinks hiring the German is following a similar trend to the appointment of Martin.

“Gerrard was probably the frontrunner. Most of the fans wanted Steven Gerrard but that’s gone now,” Dodds said on Sportsound.

Danny Rohl, if you go down that route again, I’m not saying he’s not a good manager but it’s kind of rinse and repeat. I don’t think the Rangers fans want that.

“I think it’s huge that the hierarchy at Rangers take the fans into account for this one. You don’t select your manager through fans but I think they have to take the fans’ view into account.”

Rangers fans want a manager with a ruthless mentality, someone who has a track record of winning trophies. That is why appointing Rohl is seen as another gamble when they want someone who has more experience.

Djeidi Gassama would benefit from Rohl’s appointment

Rohl – who was dubbed ‘unreal’ by Barry Bannan – will be chomping at the bit to manage Rangers, and winger Djeidi Gassama would love to be reunited with his former boss.

Djeidi Gassama’s record under Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday in all competitions.

Gassama was adored by Rohl during his time at Wednesday before the 22-year-old moved north of the border in the summer.

The Frenchman, who scored four goals in six games during Champions League qualifying, is yet to find the net in the Scottish Premiership in seven appearances.

Arguably, appointing Rohl is the best-case scenario for Gassama, but not for their chances of winning silverware.
