Birmingham City fans demand ‘wages are deducted’ after ‘mindless’ incident in Derby draw

Birmingham City’s poor run of form continued on Boxing Day as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Derby County at St. Andrew’s.

It was a disappointing result, especially considering the visitors were down to 10 players from the 39th minute.

However, despite going 1-0 down, Jack Robinson equalised just after the hour mark to level the scoreline for the Blues.

While Chris Davies, who is under pressure at Birmingham, pushed for a winner late on, the match ended on a sour note as captain Christoph Klarer was sent off for a reckless challenge, much to the annoyance of the home supporters.

Birmingham City fans fume with Christoph Klarer red card

Despite Birmingham’s poor form in recent matches, Klarer had been one of the positives.

The defender netted in the 1-1 draw against Charlton earlier this month and put in several fantastic performances in late November.

However, with the Blues and Davies more desperate for a win than ever, the centre-back made a terrible challenge that could not only cost the West Midlands side the win against Derby, but their upcoming matches as well.

With the match dying out, Klarer made a high foot challenge when going for the ball, which gave the referee no choice but to brandish a red card.

As a result, multiple Birmingham fans were outraged that the defender could do something so stupid, and were quick to express their anger on X.

Many fans were also quick to point out the potential long-term consequences of his challenge, with Klarer now suspended for a busy run of matches.

What did Chris Davies say about Klarer’s red card?

While Birmingham City continue to prepare for the January transfer window, they could be looking to change manager soon if results continue to disappoint.

The Blues have now failed to win any of their last five matches and have fallen to 15th in the Championship.

As a result, Davies is in need of a result, and the draw against Derby will not have done him any favours.

Now, the manager was quick to state how big a loss Klarer would be ahead of their upcoming Southampton tie on Monday.

He told Birmingham Live on 26 December: “I think it was an uncharacteristic mistake from him. What can I say? Someone who is a colossal leader for us will be a miss, no doubt. That’s him obviously suspended.

“Christoph has been fantastic, he doesn’t make many mistakes, but that was obviously one of them.”
